The Local Pig - East Bottoms
/The name says it all. If you are looking for Kansas City’s best local butcher, look no further. The Local Pig is located in the East Bottoms of Kansas City and it supplies a wide variety of humanely raised meats from local farms.
Enter the bright little shop and immediately you will see a map of the local farms that supply the shop’s steaks, roasts, chops, sausages, lamb, goat, duck, rabbit, charcuterie and much more. The shop is filled with two large cases that display the freshly cut meat.
Behind the counter you can observe the meat-making process and for the truly brave, the shop offers hands-on classes to patrons on Sundays. Topics include breaking down the animals, making sausages, and creating charcuterie.
Another service the Local Pig provides is called a “Butcher Box,” which includes a week’s worth of varied selections of meats and handmade products like pastas, soups, or fresh herbs to complement the butcher's cuts.
But the true gem of our whole experience was the Pigwich.
The Pigwich is the Local Pig’s food truck located in the back parking lot of the shop. In just the few months since its been open, the Pigwich has drawn over 1,000 people a week to try their delicious sandwiches made with the meats from the butcher shop.
Bethany and I tried the Banh Mi and Blake tried the burger... In no exaggeration these sandwhiches were the best we have ever had in Kansas City. The sandwhiches completely melted in our mouth and we couldn’t get enough of the homemade potato chips. At $7 a sandwich, Pigwich offers an incredibly yummy experience at a very fair price. (I would pay anything for another Banh Mi)
Our sandwiches were gone in record time. It was a nice day so we sat outside at the picnic tables next to the food truck. All in all, The Pigwhich was one of the best sandwich/lunch experiences we have ever had in Kansas City and we would highly recommend.
