Mud Pie Bakery - Westport
/Mud Pie bakery is located on 39th street in a yellow, mid-town style house, surrounded by tattoo shops on either side. For two years, the little bakery-house has been serving downtown patrons with delicious, vegan baked goods.
Walking into the cute house-turned-bakery, we were pleased to see a huge pastry case. We saw muffins, bagels, sweet and savory scones, biscotti’s, mini bundt cakes, stuffed pretzels and many more kinds of freshly baked goods. YUM.
Sitting behind the pastry case was large coffee menu boasting Oddly Correct coffee and espresso. The barista on shift shared with us that Mud Pie was the first coffee house in the city to serve Oddly Correct. Clearly that deserves some street cred. Similar to all the pastry offerings at Mud Pie, the coffee menu is also sensitive to allergy and dietary needs. The menu offers rice, soy, almond and hemp milk as alternatives to dairy.
Once we ordered our coffee and desserts, we quickly found a reading/dining room all to ourselves. The once-bedrooms have been turned into study rooms with stuffed bookcases and retro art lining the walls.
We tried the Peary-Ginger Muffin, Chocolate Coconut Bar, and Cherry Lemon-Lime Cupcake. Although the desserts were vegan, taste was not compromised. The lemon lime cupcake was tender, moist, sweet and tangy. The Peary Ginger muffin was sweet, spicy and light – we loved it.
Mud Pie Bakery was a happy little discovery. It seems like a perfect place to study or a quiet place to have desert with friends. It's warm a cozy in the middle of the downtown bustle and their one of a kind treats will leave you feeling satisfied.
