If you were to interview patrons at their award winning location on Westport road you might hear things like, inspiring, elegant, bright, urban but mostly just delicious. Husband and wife duo, Colby and Megan Garrelts, have been delighting the city since 2004. On a recent Sunday morning we decided it was time to give Bluestem's Sunday brunch a try.

Mud Pie bakery is located on 39th street in a yellow, mid-town style house, surrounded by tattoo shops. We visited Mud Pie Bakery on the eve of its second birthday. For two years, the bakery has been serving downtown patrons with delicious, vegan baked goods.

There are only 6 chairs and the whole place can’t be bigger than 600 square feet, but every inch is packed with personality. The entire storefront is made of windows and the décor uses urban style pastels to make the place feel bright and relaxed.

They stay true to their blends by always brewing them, “by the cup” which means their beans are never sent through an automatic brewer. When you visit the café, you will receive your coffee through French press or pour-over, which preserves the freshness and taste of every cup. We think that is pretty cool.

Blue Bird’s mission is to bring Mid American Artisan Cuisine to Kansas City. For almost 12 years, Blue Bird has crafted their menu with produce and meat from local, organic, all-natural family farms. They have built a strong network with local farmers who supply all their ingredients and they carry a strong presence in the city as one of the favorite go-to spots for organic, local eating.
